Bitter Work Collection

The term “Kung Fu” (功夫), now written in Pinyin as “Gongfu,“ consists of two words, Kung (功), meaning “hard/skillful work,” and Fu (夫), “time spent.”

The accepted English translation is, therefore “Hard work acquired over a long period of time,” and although it is commonly considered to refer to a specific Chinese martial art, the term can apply to skill in any art earned through serious, extended, study and practice.
